Per fresh research, the average earner in the UK would need half a century of salary to attain the net worth of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.
Expanding Financial Divide Through the Years
The analysis analyzed financial assets information covering the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that back in 2006-08, it would have needed 38 years of typical employment income to reach the richest segment of the economic ladder.
A research lead associated with the analysis observed: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings across their entire working life would remain unable to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."
Quantifying the Financial Disparity
The research revealed that the gap between the wealth of the median citizen and someone in the top 10% was £1 million in the pre-crisis period, but had widened to £1.3m in inflation-adjusted terms by the pandemic years.
The researcher continued: "These differences are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life affluent tend to remain affluent, and vice versa."
Comparative Financial Divide
Despite the economic divide widening in absolute terms, the portion of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," per the study.
During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.
Contributors of Economic Disparity
So-called "automatic" appreciation, through growing real estate costs and variations in pension valuations, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap from 2010 onward, per the analysis.
These appreciations typically went to elderly homeowners, the study demonstrates – intensifying the age-based economic gap.
Age-Based Economic Gaps
The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and those in their early 60s more than doubled in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.
Area-Based Differences
Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced regional variations, with the median value of net worth in 2020-22 standing at £290k in the southeastern region, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, versus £110,000 in the north-east.
COVID Era Impact
Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns limited opportunities for spending, the data shows many households were able to save, increasing their wealth.
Wealthier families fared much better, though. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their available funds rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. On the other hand, the average household in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings increase by £4,200," the study reveals.
