Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the option to question specific decisions from the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
