Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials report initial examinations suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official said the incident made him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
