In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
