Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
